How Many People Could Be Fed for the Price of a Corvette?

What if we told you buying a Corvette does feed a lot of people? Corvette Forum members chime in on the provocative question.

Buying a sports car means experiencing a rush of emotions. Here’s an amazing machine that through your hard work you’ve earned the right to own and enjoy. But you also know it will be viewed by some as excessive.

Corvette Forum senior member cor66vette can tell you a little about that. He spotted a recent Facebook post in which a ‘Vette owner was asked about the number of people he could have fed for the cost of his ride. In response, the Corvette owner chose to draw attention to the number of jobs involved in the creation of America’s sports car.

Hindsight in the Era of Social Media

The FB post in question actually surfaced a few years back. However, seeing what other Corvette Forum members have to say about it makes for an interesting social experiment. Let us know what you think about it.

A guy looked at my Corvette the other day and said, “I wonder how many people could have been fed for the money that car cost.”

I replied, “I am not sure. It fed a lot of families who built it in Bowling Green, Kentucky; it fed the people who make the tires; it fed the people who made the components that went into it; it fed the people in the copper mine who mined the copper for the wires; it fed people in Decatur, Illinois at Caterpillar who make the trucks that haul the copper ore; it fed the trucking people who hauled it from the plant to the dealer, and it fed the people working at the dealership and their families. BUT … I have to admit, I guess I really don’t know how many people it fed.

CHECK OUT: What Forum Members Are Saying

An overwhelming number of forum members seem to feel justified in their mutual dismissal of the anonymous questioner. Whether it’s a Corvette or some other luxury item, their position is that free Americans have the right to spend their money however they see fit. Their hard work — building Corvettes, for example — grants them that right.

Interestingly enough, many members point out that “there are lots of cars that cost more.” And they’re right — the all-American Corvette remains an exceptional performance value. Italians must eat so well each time a Ferrari is sold!
