The LS has long been ubiquitous among Chevrolet products and performance-enhancing engine swaps. The LS is — and continues to be — the benchmark for compact small block V8 engines. However, by applying modern technology to the pushrod motor, the new LT engine is proving itself to be a powerhouse .

Direct injection, combined with ever-more strict emissions standards means that the technology in the LT has both up sides and down sides. On the up side, the LT is far more efficient. Fuel economy reports from C7 owners regularly get into the high 20s, if not more. It also makes more power. Low-end torque on the LT1, for example, is a big jump compared to the LS3. On the down side, it is far easier to build an LS motor with a thin wallet; aftermarket support for LS motors is unrivaled.

Does that mean we’re completely dismissing the LS motor altogether? Not a chance. But the LT1 and LT4 are the new kids on the block, and we are quite happy with their performance. If the LT5 rumors are true, it’ll be an all-new benchmark.
