Horsepower Wars Were in Full Swing in the ’60s, and Getting One Horsepower Per Cubic Inch Was a Pretty Big Deal

Horsepower is one of those things that you can never have too much of. So when GM put the 427 in the C2 Corvette, they weren’t fooling around. Displacing 427 cubic inches, this V8 had 435 horsepower, and 460 lb/ft of grunt.

While it might not have the lore of the L88 V8, the L71 427 in the “Muscle Car of the Week” featured above was still equally impressive. Providing huge amounts of power was one aspect, but also having tame manners for the road was another thing all together.

C2 Corvette

Placing that engine in the C2 gave the 427 Corvette a legendary status. Open the hood, and you’ll see a trio of exclusive 2bbl Holley carbs to help the engine breathe.

In this gorgeous example, you’ll find a close ratio 4-speed, with a green on green exterior and interior color combination. Goodwood Green is the exact name for this shade. If you think you’ve seen it before, it may be because it was one of the most popular colors for 1967. Yet despite the popularity, Goodwood Green was only used on the C2.

The 427 was used again, however, in the C6 Corvette, most notably in the Z06. Long live cubic inches!
