You’d Better Get a 2018 Corvette While You Can

The 2018 Chevrolet Corvette could be the rarest model year in decades.

With 2017 dwindling, automakers are hard at work pushing 2018 models onto dealership lots. But Chevrolet got a comparatively late start getting the 2018 Corvette out. And from here, it looks like the model year could be one of the shortest in its long and illustrious lifespan.

As Motor Authority reports (citing the Bowling Green Daily News), Corvette production is expected to restart in November, then cease again in January. Obviously, that’s not a lot of time.

As Cars Direct reported in July, Corvette production halted earlier this year. The Bowling Green, Kentucky plant went idle from August to October to complete work on a new paint shop. While these improvements are necessary, the stoppage puts a major dent in production.

Once January 22 rolls around, Chevy will switch gears and begin work on the 2019 Corvette. Motor Authority estimates that the automaker will only produce 9,700 Corvettes for the year. In comparison, it built roughly 30,000 ‘Vettes in 2016. This year, the automaker has shifted 18,891 Corvettes so far. Unless it can pull a rabbit out of its hat, it won’t catch up with last year’s figures. The ’18 Corvette’s short production timeline clearly won’t help either.

With 2018 Corvette production planned for just four months, expect 2019 to be an epic year for America’s Sports Car. If Chevy’s willing to cut production (and sales) figures for 2018, it must have something good up its sleeve. Only time will tell, but our fingers are crossed that something big – hint, hint, mid-engined Corvette – is coming.
