These days, sports cars come with all sorts of interesting options. But can a custom VIN get your C7 Corvette ZR1 in your garage a little quicker?
One of the joys of purchasing an upper-end sports car are the many interesting options available. In recent years, we’ve seen an influx of little, special details you can add to new cars. Mostly because they add straight profit to the manufacturer’s bottom line, of course. But also because when you pony up to buy a special car, it’s nice to have the option to make it even more unique. And one of the cooler options we’ve seen on the C7 Corvette ZR1 is the custom VIN, which Corvette Forum member Corvette ED posted info about here.
“I was surprised to see on the C7 Corvette ZR1 registry that 12 cars have been built with this option. Then I got to thinking. If you wanted your allocation to move up, this is a way to get it done.
Two dealers in my area have each had two cars built with this option and one of the two has a 3rd car coming with this option.
VIN 003 Orange Convertible Kerbeck Chevy
004 Orange Coupe Whitmoyer Chevy for Street Speed 717
005 White Convertible Kerbeck Chevy
006 Orange Coupe Patriot Chevy Limerick PA First ZR1 Going to Callaway
007 Orange Coupe Smith Chevy Burleson TX5 out of the first 10 cars built ordered with the custom VIN option.”
Jeff V., however, doesn’t believe that a custom VIN leads to an expedited delivery.
“Custom VINs don’t mean your car gets built sooner. If I want VIN 5000, it doesn’t mean I need to wait a year for it to come up in the sequence. The reverse is also true. The car gets built when GM puts it into the production schedule.”
But thankfully, MATTBEAVER tracks down more info on the topic.
“How Selectable VIN works on the C7 Corvette ZR1:
Dealer submits the order with the RPO: PIN included
GM will contact customer on the choice of VIN #Things to consider:
The # must be within our current sequence format.
It’s the last 4 digits of the VIN, not the whole VIN sequence.
Must be within our planned production quantity. (I.E. if we build 1,000 cars, customer cannot have #1001 or above).
Price tag of $5,000If you have a customer/dealer interested in this option and serious about putting in an order, we can have the product team work with them personally to ensure their order is handled correctly. You’ll just have to let me know if that is needed.”
A little bit later, he also clarifies how this process works in terms of build speed.
“Indeed, timing was important for those buyers. The other allocations have already been placed during the normal allocation process.”
All of which makes a lot of sense. And even if it might be too late to snag an early VIN # on a C7 Corvette ZR1 now, this could certainly come in handy with future products. In the meantime, be sure and head over here to scope out all the latest info on custom VINs!
