Vette City Con Combines Corvettes with Comic Books

Alt pop culture and Corvette history might seem like strange bedfellows. But they go together much better than you might think.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last decade or so, you already know that comics are kind of a big deal again. All of us who grew up spending our loose change so we could flip through pages of expertly animated stories don’t have to resort to our imaginations anymore, however. These days, comic book heroes dominate the box office. And in the process, they’ve generated an entirely new audience. Including, it appears, those who also dig Corvettes.

Such is the Vette City Con, the genius combination of the National Corvette Museum, a comic book convention, and a boatload of pop culture. At first glance, the correlation between these seemingly very different things might seem odd. But cars have always played a huge part in pop culture. Which, of course, includes comics, science fiction, and pop art. Heck, Corvettes themselves look like something derived from the very same ink soaked pages we clung to as youths.

Still, the Vette City Con is a very young event. Its debut in 2017 was used merely as a gauge for interest, which turned out to exceed expectations. Chad Sheppard, co-organizer of the event, told theBowling Green Daily Newsthat they expected 1,500 people to attend this year, nearly double last year’s attendance. “We would love to see it grow to 30,000 people,” he added about the 2018 event, from Jan. 27 & 28.

And why not? Comic Cons are incredibly popular in much larger cities than Bowling Green, drawing massive crowds each year. But the Vette City Con offers something none of those other venues can. Set amid a huge group of amazing Corvettes and history, it’s almost like getting twice the experience for your money. And what else would a superhero want to drive, anyway?
