Obsession of the Week: 1962 Corvette Fuelie Race Car
Following extensive restoration and research, this 1962 Corvette is one of the coolest vintage racers around!
Perhaps more than any vehicle in history, the Corvette has quite the racing pedigree. Even in the early days, that name was synonymous with motorsports, helping further development of the legendary road car. Today, Corvettes are still a common sight on the track and in the winner’s circle. So when we see iconic vintage racers like this 1962 Corvette fuelie, we pay proper homage to them for their place in history.
This particular car, which we spotted over at Pro Team Corvette, was owned and campaigned by a gentleman named Ben Moore. Like many racing Corvettes of its day, the car was ordered new with a host of helpful options. This particular ’62 sports RPO-687 heavy duty brakes, suspension, a fast steering adapter, a 3.70-geared posi rear end, and even double front sway bars.
The 1962 Corvette was already pretty formidable from the factory. But Moore wasn’t finished yet. To make it safe and usable, he added a roll bar, driver’s side racing windshield, and rally racing lights. Moore painted the car Honduras Maroon with ghost white racing stripes, which nicely contrasts the Fawn interior.
Moore campaigned the car in SCCA racing in 1962, and immediately experienced success. After racing at Marlboro, V.I.R., Cumberland, Vineland, Bridgehampton, and Watkins Glen, Moore took home the Northeast SCCA A-Production Divisional Championship. Today, it looks better than new thanks to an exhaustive restoration.
Pro Team spent four years researching the history of this 1962 Corvette. And the results certainly paid off. The seller was able to locate tons of old race photos, grid sheets, and race records. You certainly don’t see old race cars this amazing and well documented very often. But we’re glad this one has survived the test of time!
