Formula Drift C6 Corvette Gets a Roll Cage

Matt Field is running a C6 Corvette in 2018 for Formula Drift. So, how do you make it safe when you’re throwing a car sideways?

We have written about Matt Field’s C6 Corvette before and how he is running it in Formula Drift. As you may know drifting is the sport of sliding a car sideways, while creating massive amounts of tire smoke. It is a sport that takes a ton of balls and skill.

It can also be called the ballet or figure skating of motorsports. We don’t say this to insult anyone, but the competition aspect is a point system, in which judges give scores on each drivers performance. Unlike racing it is not about being fastest, but it is about putting on the best show or performance. Just like figure skating….

Anyway, since the cars in Formula Drift are always sliding sideways at high speed, safety is a serious concern. This C6 Corvette has already been torn down to the bare chassis, as we wrote about before. Now is the time to figure out making this Corvette rigid and safe.

In this video, YouTube channel Donut Media lets us follow along with the building of the roll cage. Their C6 Corvette was a flood damage car and it is full of sand. After pressure washing the bare chassis, the fun begins.

Starting with the main roll hoop, the boys cover the process step by step. This really makes you appreciate the time and skills these guys have put into this build. The whole roll cage building journey is very interesting to watch.

The C6 Corvette has a construction of steel and fiberglass, that is not usually the norm in most drift cars. The guys need to build around the fiberglass and find the steel to weld the cage in properly. Check out the video for the full roll cage build and let us know what you think in the comments.
