Could the Mid-Engined Corvette Actually Start at $65,000?

Automobile magazine report raises new questions about the C8’s pricing and targeted demographic.

All the buzz around the mid-engined Corvette has been fueling some interesting rumors about the car. But this latest bit of speculation is, by far, some of the best news we’ve heard to date about the highly-anticipated model.

According to an Automobile report, the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette C8 “Zora” could have a base price as low as $65,000. That’s  a far cry from that whopping $450,000 buyers have to dish out to own a new Ford GT Supercar. In fact, the Automobile report puts the new mid-engine Corvette at a cost $40,000 less than the expected starting price for the new C7 ZR1. Industry insiders anticipate the ZR1 will cost $105,000.

Even on the higher end, the speculated mid-engine Corvette price falls under $100,000 with an expected sticker of $95,000, according to the Automobile report.

So, what’s the catch? Well, we’re still trying to sort through this new startling revelation. Could it be that Chevy aims to target competitors like Porsche and BMW rather than supercar manufacturers?

That certainly would fall in line with other rumors regarding General Motor’s interest in redefining the Corvette nameplate as its own brand. And let’s be honest: The idea that GM would build a Corvette that skews so far out of the price range of those who’ve made the car so successful seems a bit short sighted — even when wanting to appeal to younger buyers.

Of course, this could also be a matter of Automobile’s price speculations being just that: speculations. And perhaps key GM decision have their eyes set on loftier goals for the mid-engine Corvette, as previously thought.

Either way, we could start getting official details as early as January when the mid-engined 2019 Corvette C8 “Zora” debuts at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
