Corvettes Are Safe Cars: Both Occupants Survived this Accident
Twenty-one-year-old driver now faces reckless driving charge.
We find it amazing that the passengers actually survived this accident. The driver, 21-year-old Jiefu Gong, crashed the Corvette back in May in Michigan. Police suspect that Gong was driving too fast into a turn when he lost control of the Z06 and hit a tree, as detailed in an MLive Michigan report.
But surprisingly, Gong and his 17-year-old passenger only suffered a few broken bones as a result of the ordeal, which is pretty amazing considering the car’s condition. On top of that, both occupants had to be pulled from the wreckage by firefighters, just as it was being engulfed in flames.
Now it appears Gong will need help of a different kind. More specifically, legal assistance to represent him on a felony reckless driving charge stemming from the accident.
A preliminary hearing for his case is was scheduled for August 29. According to MLive Michigan, the charge carries a punishment of up to five years in prison with the possibility of a fine of $1,000 to $5,000.
The incident is also likely to continue to fuel some debate over whether it’s safe for a 21-year-old to own or even drive a car as powerful as a 650-horsepower Corvette. It certainly has sparked some interesting conversations here at Corvette Forum in the past.
