Not today Satan: Track-focused Corvette takes purpose-built Demon to the wood shed for a good old fashioned whooping!
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you undoubtedly know all about the Dodge Demon. A car built to do one thing very, very well. And that’s go fast in a straight line. Heck, it doesn’t get any more purpose built than a car that comes with a set of big drag radials and skinny front tires as (part of) a $1 option. There’s also a built-in trans brake and 840 raging ponies of 6.2-liter supercharged V8 to propel you down the quarter mile in, allegedly, the 9-second range. So you would only expect a Demon to be easily capable of whipping a new Corvette ZR1 at the drag strip, right?
Well, you’d be wrong. Despite holding a nearly 100 horsepower disadvantage and a total lack of the Demon’s drag racing quirks, the Corvette ZR1 in this video easily holds its own. Not that it was designed to. In fact, the Corvette ZR1 is more of a track-focused monster. One more comfortable carving up corners at speeds exceeding our limits than blasting down some rubber coated straight surface. But that doesn’t mean it can’t also be pretty darn good at that, too.
The two cars get a pretty even start off the line, but it’s all Corvette ZR1 after that. The ‘Vette clearly pulls away with no problem, leaving the Demon driver checking out his sweet wing. We can’t see the final results thanks to crappy cell phone zoom, but the announcer calls it a 10.20-second pass at 137 mph. Meanwhile, the Demon can only muster an 11.5 @ 134.
One could argue until the cows come home about what caused this result. And of course, the YouTube commenters do. But no matter how you slice it, it’s still a very impressive showing for the fresh Corvette ZR1. And maybe a little pie in the face for Demon fans!
