Corvette ZR1 Convertible: This Is What it’ll Look Like

The king of the hill will get an open-top variant that will help drivers enjoy sunny weather while being able to embarrass supercars.

After nearly a year of examining spy shots, and eight years after the previous iteration, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is back and it looks more badass than ever. While Chevrolet hasn’t confirmed that an open-top version of the most powerful production Corvette ever made is in the works, these spy shots from Reddit user Coonark00 all but confirm that a convertible variant of the ZR1 is coming. The spy shots give us a decent glimpse of what the ZR1 Convertible will look like. But we took it another step further, and came up with a rendering (above) of the supercar’s appearance free of any camouflage.

While the Corvette ZR1 Convertible that was spotted was wearing the smaller of the two wings, the one we envisioned is wearing the taller, much more pronounced two-stage wing that provides the supercar with maximum downforce. And the convertible will share the unique carbon-fiber hood that allows for air to be shoveled into the massive engine. The massive front black splitter, black wheels, carbon-fiber vents, and other performance oriented goodies are expected to carry over directly from the regular coupe, especially when opting for the ZTK performance package.

Despite being based on the formidable Corvette ZR1, we expect the convertible to have the same automatic mechanism to get the top up and down that’s on the current Corvette Z06. The top, though, should be upgraded to withstand higher top speeds, as the ZR1 is going to be a completely different animal than the Z06. While it will make the ZR1 a little heavier, this is the convertible model we’re talking about after all, which should appeal to those that want to drive their ZR1s spiritedly around a windy road instead of attempting to set a new track record at a raceway.

With the roof off, passengers will be able to fully enjoy the grunt of the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that has been upgraded to crank out 755 horsepower and 715 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet hasn’t announced pricing for the Corvette ZR1 yet, but we expect the coupe to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $120,000, with the convertible adding an additional $5,000 to the price tag.
