C7 Corvette Transmission Discussion Focuses on A8 Durability

Worst case scenarios aren’t representative of a product’s durability.

One of the darker clouds that’s stayed with the C7 from its inception was the perceived durability of the 8-speed automatic transmission. Cases of the paddle-shift-operated gearbox overheating with extensive track use were widespread, but most customers don’t use their Corvette in such a way.

However, early versions of the transmission seemed to have some rough shifting associated either with the transmission controller, and sometimes in conjunction with the active fuel management system as well. As far as we can tell, any issue raised was dealt with promptly under warranty by Chevrolet.

No complaints by our members had been made about the warranty coverage, so we can only assume that one is a programming and software situation that needed to be ironed out.

Everything we’ve seen from our members indicate this is a non-issue with the 2017 models, however. After a lengthy 5 page thread, almost everyone is reporting happily on their gearbox. This includes some folks who’ve done track days, autocross and even a day filled with runs at the drag strip. And if you recall, there was an 8-speed automatic that hopped down to the strip and pulled consistent 10’s all day long. As far as testaments go, that says a lot about the durability of the transmission.
