Two Corvette Engineers Arrested For Street Racing

A great night turned into a really rotten day for two Corvette engineers last week in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Someone once said, “choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” It’s nice to have fun at work, but it’s entirely possible to have too much fun. It is supposed to be work, after all.

Just ask the two GM engineers who were arrested on Wednesday, January 8. According to Autoblog, the two were temporarily in Bowling Green, Kentucky, assisting with the C8 Corvette launch, when they let their enthusiasm get the best of them.

Leaving a local watering hole, the two men took to a local backroad to “test” the capabilities of two pre-production C8 Corvettes. They initiated a drag race, exceeding 100 miles per hour on a road with a 45 mile per hour speed limit. That’s when they were caught red-handed (lead-footed?) by the Kentucky State Police.

The two Corvettes were clocked at 120 MPH and 100 MPH on the 45 MPH road, with a third pre-production C8 wisely choosing not to participate in the impromptu drag race. The drivers were arrested, with several charges.

A Bad End to a Good Night

According to Car & Driver, both were charged with reckless driving, racing a motor vehicle on a public highway, and speeding 26 mph or more over the speed limit. They were released on a $1,000 bond, but the C8s were impounded.

A fairly active forum thread popped up right here on Corvette Forum. Our members were some of the first online to have information about the situation. Every piece of information was disseminated, including the Snapchat taken at the scene by one of the officers!

There’s a time and a place for everything. Manufacturers invest incredible sums of money into specially-built facilities for high-speed testing. We’ve all heard the tales of factory engineers street racing on Woodward Avenue in the golden age of muscle cars. However, those days are long behind us.

It seems like these two got caught up in the moment and ignored their better judgment. While we can certainly understand the excitement of the two engineers, we’d be irresponsible to condone their behavior.
