Tron-themed 1977 C3 Corvette Goes Viral on Reddit
Wildly customized Corvette was a non-running project that was resurrected after a couple of years of work.
YouTuber Brian Schmidt posted a new video of his reborn Tron-themed C3 Corvette after he spent years getting the car back in roadworthy condition. “This unique glow in the dark car used to sit inside a video arcade as the venue mascot next to the Tron arcade game,” he says. “It was placed in storage and years later was discovered to have had an electrical meltdown, which I finished rewiring just days ago after two years of effort.”
When Schmidt posted a picture and video of the Corvette on Reddit, it sparked a lengthy discussion about the car and its interesting past, not to mention lots of geeky comments about the original Tron movie. As shown in the video, the C3 features glow-in-the-dark pinstriping to give it that Tron look. Even the wheels glow. According to the Reddit thread, Schmidt describes the car as a ’77 model year C3 that was fitted with a Daytona racing package at the front and the “European rear bumper with spoiler lip on the back.” Interestingly, he says that the wheels are “spaced and staggered” and were sourced from a VW Golf. Indeed, they do like identical to the 18-inch wheels fitted to the MK5 GTI. Schmidt also points out that the wheels were the most expensive part of the Corvette project, thanks to how much paint was needed to get the desired appearance.
The inside of the Corvette looks almost as cool as the outside. And it definitely wouldn’t be complete without a DVD of the original Tron movie playing on a TV screen mounted to the center console. “It has been quite the little labor of love to bring it back from the brink,” says Schmidt. “That first time hearing it ROAR back to life tho… totally. worth. it.”
Speaking of roaring to life, the C3’s original 350 V8 was rebuilt with “performance everything.”
As another Redditor jokingly points out, “That car is a thing of 80s beauty! It looks like it should be gracing the cover of a Trapper Keeper.”
