Corvette Grand Sport vs Mustang Shelby GT350: What’s Up in the Forums
Choosing a new Corvette GS over the Shelby GT350 seems like an obvious choice. But is it really that simple?
We’ll be the first to admit that the Corvette and the Mustang are really nothing alike. One’s more of a muscle car, while the other is a proper sports car. And yet, people insist on comparing the two legendary nameplates. That holds true both at your job’s water cooler and here at Corvette Forum. But we’re guessing that this recent discussion was just a bit more heated than your average break room chat. And it all started when arm posed a simple question regarding, specifically, the Corvette Grand Sport and Mustang Shelby GT350.
“I have recently owned both with manuals. Sold them and considering getting one of them again. Real seller’s remorse. I know this is a Corvette forum, but I’m curious as to your thoughts on either car. For me, both represent the muscle car era.”
While we admittedly like both cars, we don’t necessarily agree with that last part. And neither does Kevin A Jones.
“C7 is a sportscar, GT350 is a muscle car. Which do you prefer?”
Which is a nice way of putting it. Mcrider, on the other hand, is a little more blunt.
“One will corner like a slot car and run 200 mph while turning heads every time you drive it. The other is just a Mustang.”
Still, quite a few folks appreciate the Mustang’s merits. Including buck fever.
“Yeah but that GT350 is a very impressive machine. My best friend has a 2017 and on our last group cruise through the winding mountain roads in WV it laid the hammer down! Realistically, it’s a great car and I’m a Corvette homer. The sound from that engine/exhaust is amazing.”
But to ExRedRacer, no Mustang is anything anyone might call special.
“When you see a ‘Stang from a distance, it can look like any garden-variety Mustang. You have to get close to read the badging on the car to know it’s the go fast model. But when you see a Corvette from any distance, you know right away, without a doubt, that you’re looking at a very capable, high-performance machine.”
And several members, including New World Matt, can actually speak from first hand experience.
“I actually just traded in my 2018 GT350, black with no stripes, for a new 2017 Grand Sport. Manual, 2LT, black with no stripes over the weekend. Let me tell you, I’m walking on air. So excited about being back in a GS. I bought the GT350 because it’s an incredible machine and a crazy experience every time I drive. Loud, fast, awesome. It rumbles, barks, and screams. And it feels like it’s about to explode at high rpm. Which is all great! It’s just that I’m 47 now and I wanted the high tech luxury of the Corvette with it’s low end torque, higher build quality, sophistication, lower weight, and all around bad*** looks and sexy styling.”
And so the debate rages on. Which is surprising, given the fact that the forums are made up of a bunch of hardcore Corvette enthusiasts. So we want to know what you think. Head over here and let us know which you’d rather have a, new Grand Sport, or a Shelby GT350, and why!
