Carbon Fiber C6 Corvette Throws Down At Formula Drift Seattle

Matt Field Drifting

Matt Field pilots 1,060 horsepower C6 Corvette at Evergreen Speedway for Formula Drift Round Five, but is knocked out in Top 16.

The sound of this Vortech supercharged LS engine is something that will stick with you for days after hearing it. While the Corvette may not be the most sought after drift chassis, we sure are glad Matt Field rolls with one. What started life as a flood-damaged and stock 2013 Corvette, eventually became this carbon-bodied, tire slaying monster. If seeing that process interests you, Donut Media has an entire series on the build of this car.

Perhaps the best part of attending FD Monroe is the proximity to the warm-up area spectators can be. Standing less than 50 feet away from the roaring LS engine not only lets you hear it, but you feel it. After a couple of figure eights to warm up the front tires, and scrub in the fronts, it’s go time. The drivers line up at the start line, and at the turn of the light, they barrel down the straight toward the wall. The massive sweeping bank leads immediately into a tight technical run on the infield. Minor mistakes can cause significant problems on this course.

Another fantastic feature of FD is the open pits. If you’d like to say hello to drivers, get an autograph, or just admire the cars, you can! The price of admission gets you into the pits as well. This led to a very up close and personal overlook of the Falken Corvette. Getting up close and personal with this beast allows you to admire the work and attention to detail that went into the construction of this car.

Field saw victory against Forrest Wang in his Top 32 Battle, moving on to battle against fellow Falken driver Justin Pawlak in the Roush Supercharged Mustang. A truly monumental battle went down. Not only an all-American throwdown but a battle that to some rings as important as good vs. evil. Chevrolet vs. Ford. Corvette vs. Mustang. An ongoing argument since 1965 was tested before our eyes.

Though well fought, this battle ends the Corvette’s run at FD Round 5. It certainly does not close the never-ending Chevy vs. Ford war.

Field currently sits 13th overall in the Formula Drift series. His next opportunity to move up comes the weekend of August 8th in St. Louis. If you are in the area, I can not recommend enough that you go witness this beast in person. Alternatively, if you would like to keep up with the St. Louis event and all future events, Formula Drift livestreams everything from qualifying to the main competition. So grab your popcorn and a beer. Let’s route for the Vette!
