C8 Corvette Gets Porsche Enthusiasts All Riled Up
Are you wondering if owners of other exotic brands might jump ship for the C8 Corvette? Well, wonder no more.
As you’ve undoubtedly noticed, the C8 Corvette has caught the attention not just of Corvette fans, but fans of other makes and models as well. The mid-engine machine single-handedly sucked the wind out of the Mustang Shelby GT500’s sails, for starters. And now, it also looks like Porsche guys are scrambling to make excuses for their own beloved rides as well.
Heck, we can’t blame them, especially since the new “base” 992 911 starts out at nearly $100k and couldn’t beat a C8 in a drag race to save it’s life. And that simple fact has caused this thread at our brother site Rennlist to literally explode to over 150 pages (so far). It starts off a few months before the C8’s reveal, and relatively calmly before things start to get a little heated.
“Personally, I’ve not been a huge fan of Corvettes, but they are great cars,” said gt9729b. “And they make some great race cars. Will be exciting and curious to see where the new mid-engine platform takes them. There could definitely be a monster in the making here.”
Quite a few folks that chime in actually admit they’re considering buying one. Still, some are skeptical that even a mid-engine Corvette can steal sales from more “exotic” cars.
“Guys, the C7 is a performance bargain already,”Surge74 points out. “Is Corvette stealing a lot of sales from Porsche, BMW, etc? No. The C8 won’t change that.”
Then comes the inevitable argument about quality.
“I hope Chevy knocks one out of the park with the C8,” said groundhog. “However, I do remember the Motor Trend Best Driver’s Car test where the latest/greatest Corvette repeatedly overheated and went into limp mode at Laguna Seca.
Porsche isn’t perfect, however, from my own experience I have largely found them to be robust and well made. As track capable road cars they can take a lot more punishment than anything else out there and this comes with a price tag.”
However, the tone changes immediately following the C8’s actual reveal.
“That car is a game changer,” said Austin997.2.
“N/A V8 engine producing 495 hp, which GM claims can do 0-60 in under 3 seconds,” added fast1. “The C8’s hp and 0-60 time are about the same as a GT3. And of course much faster than a GT4, which stickers for more than $40k over a C8. Don’t know if I’ll be buying one, but I sure as hell will be checking it out.”
“I never ever thought that I would be typing these next words,” said Rxpert. “But after the C8 reveal, I’m considering a Corvette over a GT4. What? Am I crazy???”
Some, like Marine Blue, believe that the C8 might even force Porsche to step their game up.
“Wow, that’s a lot of car for the money. I can only hope that this forces Porsche to stop neutering the Boxster/Cayman so they can compete, that’s a win for everyone.”
So if you were wondering whether the C8 Corvette might convert a bunch of exotic car owners to Chevy, well, there you go. In fact, this thread’s poll indicates that only 16% of the hundreds who participated don’t like the C8. And a whopping 20% say they’ll be ordering one soon. So if you enjoy watching owners of “other” brands scramble as much as we do, head over here and check out the entire thread and all of its excellent responses!
