C7 Corvette Z06 Takes On Mustang Shelby GT500 in the Streets
It’s modified C7 Z06 vs. modified GT500, and, well, we certainly didn’t see that coming.
This video from newcomer to the streets, Stroker965, has the office divided on the outcome, so let’s talk about it.
With its supercharged LT4 V8 engine, the C7 Corvette Z06 is not slouch in a straight line. 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of twist make sure of that. However, throw full bolt-ons, heads, a cam and methanol injection into the mix and things get serious. Anyone who thinks this low 10-second combo is slow needs to reevaluate their priorities. Oh, maybe they’re just the Leah Pritchett of the street racing world.
So, go figure, this modified C7Z is lining up with a Mustang Shelby GT500. Of course, with it’s supercharged 5.8-liter Trinity V8 it’s also not exactly slow. In stock form, it’s kicking out an equally nutty 662 horsepower and 631 lb-ft of torque. Sounds even between the two on paper, but the Mustang is carrying a couple extra hundred pounds and is less aerodynamic. However, like the Chevy, it’s also modified with an upgraded 4.0-liter Whipple blower and race gas.
Power figures aren’t quoted, but if either of these cars is making less than about 700 WHP, we would be surprised. So this should be pretty close, right?
Nope.
The Corvette got sent to Gapplebees by the Mustang. Yes, really. In multiple runs, the Mustang immediately jumps ahead of the Z06 and puts bus lengths on it. To add insult to injury, the Z06 owner had the Performance Data Recorder covering the action, so there’s even a replay of the beat down.
I’ll say what we’re all wondering: What was in that race gas?
