After Ford v Ferrari, this classic RPO 687 Corvette, once owned by the father of modern auto journalism, makes us want to go Cobra hunting.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the current box office smash Ford v Ferrari has little to amuse Corvette fans. However, you’d be wrong. The beginning of the movie has plenty of scenes of the early 1960s sports car racing scene in southern California — a time when Corvettes were utterly dominant.

We lost count of how many Corvettes we saw in those racing sequences. What we can tell you is that they were late C1s and early C2s. It got us in a mood to look at some Corvettes from that era, and think about how we would have liked to have gone racing back in those glory days.

Much to our surprise, we found this 1962 Corvette for sale on Bring A Trailer. Either a savvy seller or serendipity caused this timing. Either way, we’re happy to share it with you.

This car is more or less exactly what we’d want. Of course, it’s not perfect — even in 1962, getting your hands on an RPO 687 car was tough. However, for regular guys like us, this would have been an ideal way to go racing.

With that said, let’s look at the options. Powered by a fuel-injected 327, this Corvette is one of just 1,918 cars so equipped that year. With an impressive 360 horsepower on tap, this Corvette had plenty of power to hang with the early 289 Cobras.

This RPO 687 Corvette also has a four-speed manual transmission and a Posi-traction rear end, once again making it an ideal choice for road racing at the time. Apparently, one of the car’s previous owners would agree.

Between 2005 and 2008, this Corvette was owned by David E. Davis, Jr., a man often considered to be the father of modern automotive journalism. Simply put, if it wasn’t for him, you probably wouldn’t be reading Corvette Forum right now.

The ad includes a photo of Davis driving this very car, with a meatball racing number on the side. Back in the mid-1950s, Davis was a sports car racer himself before becoming an automotive journalist.

We weren’t fortunate enough to know the man personally, but we think he would have liked Ford v Ferrari. Even more than that, we’re almost certain he would have loved to see this RPO 687 Corvette tearing up Willow Springs again. If you’re reading this, and you’re fortunate enough to win the auction — you know what to do.
