1966 Corvette Sting Ray Has Patina and Appeal

Classic C2 Sting Ray with 427/425 V8 received body-off mechanical restoration back in 1999.

Every Friday is a great day. For those of us who work a traditional schedule, Friday is the soft opening to the weekend and a time of planning and anticipation. This Friday is more special than others because it kicks off the 2018 Monterey Car Week, a celebration of automobiles full of car shows, concourse events, and road trips. Auctions are also a big part of the festivities. This year’s RM Sotheby’s auction will give bidders the chance to win this beautiful 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray.

This particular C2 has significance within the Corvette enthusiast community. According to RM Sotheby’s, it was owned by Chip Miller, “the founder and organizer of Corvettes at Carlisle, one of the nation’s largest Corvette-only shows.”

From the factory, this Sting Ray was equipped with a 427/425 V8, a four-speed manual gearbox, aluminum knock-off wheels, and a teakwood steering wheel. Miller became the fifth owner in 1974. During his 30 years of ownership, he won several awards with the Corvette, including a slot in the Bloomington Gold Special Collection VI in 1989. Ten years later, he had a frame-off restoration performed, but only of the mechanical hardware; he left the Milano Maroon exterior and Saddle interior alone.

After Miller passed away, another Corvette collector bought his ’66. The car traded hands again in 2009 and once more in 2014 and has stayed with that owner for the past four years. Despite its age and various owners, this classic only has roughly 16,000 miles on its clock.

The lucky bidder will receive a substantial amount of documentation, which includes receipts related to the mechanical refreshing in 1999. There won’t be a reserve on this beauty, but RM Sotheby’s estimates it will end up going for a figure between $130,000 and $175,000.
