1962 was the last year for the C1 Corvette, and it might be our favorite.
Besides the original 1953 model, what’s your favorite C1 Corvette? The ’57? The ’59? For us, it’s the 1962 with the 327 “Fuelie” fuel-injected V8 and a four-speed.
This car, offered for sale on BringATrailer, was expertly restored back in the 1990s. It still looks good today. Black paint hides no sins, and this car shows very well in the photos. We really like the look of theses late C1s with body-colored side coves and color-matched steel wheels with poverty caps. It looks purposeful and race-ready.
We also love the red interior, which pairs wonderfully with the black exterior. The interior photos feature a pair of era-appropriate driving gloves draped over the large steering wheel. It’s a nice touch that gets us in the mood to beat up on some Porsche 356s and Jaguar XKEs.
The car has won multiple awards since its restoration, including National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) Top Flight awards. In 2012, it received the prestigious Sam Folz Award, given to owners who drive their car the greatest distance and still manage to receive a Top Flight award.
That’s no small feat with a black car. As we said, black paint does not hide flaws, and any owner of a black car will tell you it’s nearly impossible to keep clean. We admire the dedication it took to bring that particular trophy home.
We just can’t get enough of the styling of the late C1 Corvettes. The quad headlamp front end coupled with the upcoming Stingray’s quad tail light rear end lends the car a beautiful sense of symmetry and balance.
The lines of the car, combined with the stock stance, imply a slight rake. It’s as if, even when sitting still, this 1962 Corvette is poised to pounce on its prey like a jungle cat – or diving into a corner, on the hunt for European sports car blood.
With the bidding well over $100,000, it’s clear that we may never make our C1 Corvette dreams come true. However, just looking at the photos transports us back to a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth, breathing fire and encrusted in chrome.
