Sure, the C8 and C7 are amazing, but let this cammed Grand Sport remind you why the C6 is still a beast. #Murica.

The new mid-engine C8 Corvette is a game-changer in the sports car world. A European-style car with Corvette heritage available with a power-folding hard-top and 500 HP? Sign us right up! Every now and then, however, it’s worth remembering the cars that paved the way for the incredible success of the modern Corvette brand. This short vid from YouTuber Brad Raziano showcases some of the best things about the sixth-generation Corvette, from factory options to the multitude of mods that can be performed to make the car your own. Also, who can deny that a cammed LS3 is one of the best-sounding motors you can build?

The Last Analog(ish) Corvette

Sure, the C6 is controlled by dozens of computer systems, but the driving experience is decidedly less digital than the newer models. We think the C6 platform has the best set of factory gauges in any car, and you’ll have a hard time convincing us otherwise:

For example, most vehicles vaguely tell you whether the gas tank is full, empty, or somewhere in the middle. The C6? Every tick mark represents a gallon – when you reach the red, you’ve got 2 gallons left, on the dot. Same story with the speedo – every tick mark up to 100 MPH is a single mile-per-hour. From there, the gauge seamlessly switches to 5-MPH increments. This has the added benefit that the needle pretty much moves at the same speed throughout the whole range, which is pretty smart. The new digital dash units are cool, but there’s just something about watching the needle sweep across the gauge that can’t be replicated with a screen.

Dual-Mode Exhaust (Before It was Cool)

With the 2006 Z06, Chevrolet introduced the NPP option, which was comprised of a set of mufflers with valves to control the exhaust path. This meant not only a change in sound, but a performance boost as well. Fourteen years ago (we can’t believe 2006 was that long ago, either), this was a groundbreaking feature that wasn’t available on any affordable car. Most people who have driven a car with a big V8 will tell you that a loud exhaust is a must, until you have to go through a drive-through. Add an aggressive camshaft like Brad’s Stage 2 TSP cam, and you might not be able to hear your passenger (maybe that’s a good thing). With the factory NPP system, however, you have the best of both worlds – enjoy the sound of your American muscle on a spirited drive, while keeping the neighbors happy in the morning.

Brad’s added remote control to his C6, which enables him to open or close the exhaust valves at the press of a button. This lets the exhaust sound how you want, when you want. Brad’s got a remote on the visor, as well as one on his keychain so that he can switch the exhaust easily whether he’s in or out of the cockpit.

With an aftermarket camshaft thrown into the mix, you can really hear how much of a difference the dual-mode exhaust system makes – it’s truly the best of both worlds.

Easy to Modify & Tune

One of the big advantages of the C6 over the newer platforms is the ease with which you can upgrade the car. Brad’s Grand Sport came with the factory Head-Up Display, for example, but this feature can be easily added to a 1LT car in a few hours. The same job on the C7 requires pulling the whole dash! The same goes for making camshaft and valvetrain mods – on the newer cars, you have to worry about the Active Fuel Management system.

Brad’s build features a ton of parts from Texas Speed and Performance, including their Stage 2 cam package, valve springs, and pushrods. He’s also got TSP exhaust manifolds and a cat-less x-pipe; you can watch his review of this exhaust package here. He’s also added a Z06 oil cooler to his build.

Crad Raziano's Clean C6 Grand Sport

There’s no denying that the newer cars look a lot more modern and offer more performance from the factory at an incredible value. The C6, however, has a timeless, classic look with potential for incredible power by any standard. Although many of these cars are over 10 years old now, we think they’re still an awesome car to own, blending the best of modern engineering with the analog feel of a true driver’s car. Let us know what you think of Brad’s clean C6 in the comments, and check out his channel for more great videos.
