One of very few places on earth where you can actually explore the limits of the mighty C6 ZR1 Corvette.
After being blessed with the fantastic C7 ZR1 and the C8 shortly thereafter, it’s easy for Corvette fans to forget about the C6 ZR1. But when this wicked machine debuted, it was the hottest vehicle on the planet. We all marveled at what was, for a while, the ultimate Corvette. Its 638 horsepower was simply a stunning figure at the time, and it helped elevate performance cars to an entirely new level. In short, the C6 ZR1 was, and still is, an incredible and historically significant machine.
So when we came across this video from YouTubers AutoTopNL wringing a C6 Corvette ZR1 out on Germany’s Autobahn, we were obviously enthralled. Not to mention curious about just what sort of top speed they could achieve in one of the greatest Corvettes ever built on the world’s fastest public roads. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can actually explore the limits of a car like this, after all.
As such, AutoTopNL pulls out on the superhighway and lets the ZR1’s supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 eat. There, it obviously doesn’t take long for that 638 horsepower and 604 pound-foot monster to propel the 3,300-ish pound machine to eyebrow raising speeds. Which comes as no surprise, really.
Even in some traffic, AutoTopNL manages to reach a best speed of 300 kilometers-per-hour, which is around 186.5 miles-per-hour. Pretty impressive, indeed. GM originally said the car was capable of reaching 205 mph, but that would require a longer stretch of traffic-free tarmac to reach, of course. As we’d imagine, the C6 ZR1 also consumes a lot of fuel at these speeds. In this case, the estimated range plummets from a solid 400 kilometers down to 226 by the time this test drive is over.
But when you own a car as amazing as the C6 Corvette ZR1, things like fuel economy are meaningless. Here, it’s all about the pure, unadulterated driving experience. This manual transmission-equipped monster is every bit as audacious now as it was when it debuted back in 2009. Today, over a decade later, it’s still one of the craziest Corvettes ever built. And, in our opinion at least, one of the greatest cars ever built, period.
