StreetHunter C8 widebody kit draws inspiration from GT3 race cars as well as the new C8.R race car.
The new C8-generation Corvettes are almost in the hands of eager enthusiasts. And, while the styling of the stock vehicle is certainly a terrific piece of design work, there are always going to be enthusiasts who want to push the envelope of their vehicles. YouTuber TJ Hunt recently revealed that he had snagged one of the first orders for a C8 in California. Anyone familiar with Hunt’s history of modifying his cars knew it wouldn’t be long before his Corvette was transformed into something unique.
The StreetHunter 2020 Corvette Wideboy Kit designed by the talented Jon Sibal, the lead designer for Streethunter designs. He was also the designer behind the company’s stunning Supra widebody kit. “He does such a good job about receiving information that I give him about what I’m looking for,” says Hunt of the kit. Designing the C8 widebody was pretty challenging due to the sharply-creased design of the new mid-engine Corvette. “The car has so many hard edges and so many hard lines,” he says in the video. “Whereas in previous years Corvettes usually have more of a rounded body.”
“One of the biggest things that I like to do is make sure it goes with the body and it flows with the car rather than overtakes the original appearance of the car,” says Hunt. At the front, the C8 has been modified with wide over-fenders, bumper extensions, and a full-width carbon fiber lip. “One of the biggest things I wanted to do with the front fender was mimic the rear vent on the car,” Hunt says. “You’ll notice it has like a boomerang-style vent.” The angle and style of the rear intake vent were flipped and added to the rear edge of the front fender.
The rear of the C8 is widened dramatically with over-fenders. Hunt adds that one of the nice things about the design of the C8 is that the rear fenders are removable. If you modify one it’s pretty straight forward to go back to stock by bolting back on a set of stock fenders. The design of the widebody rear fenders was inspired by the Ferrari 458 GT3 that Hunt previously built. Hunt also drew a lot of inspiration for the body kit from GT3 racecars. “It’s more traditional, like what you would see in GT3 Cup racing,” he says. “This kit is more like what you would see on race car, but we tried to morph that into a streetable version.”
The rendering shows a massive rear wing that uses mounting brackets inspired by the actual C8-R racecar. “They had these horn style wing brackets. There’s really no other place to mount this wing. You can’t just go up from the hatch. You kind of half to send it back.” Below the rear bumper is a carbon fiber diffuser in place of the stock black diffuser. “What you see is what you get,” he adds. “This render is based off of our car that we built. So the color you’re seeing is Ceramic Matrix Gray.” StreetHunter has only been around for 6 months or so but their designs so far are impressive. This C8 design is no exception.
