Inspired by the American Dream

Harley Earl was one of the men who engineered the American Dream — his post-War car designs inspired a nation. One thing led to another and Earl was soon designing a low, wide, and sleek sports car. Chevrolet management loved it and the name Corvette was chosen for its naval warship meaning of small, lightweight, and maneuverable.

Part of the deal was to design a special badge for the new Corvette and Earl conceived a badge. It had a round bezel with Chevrolet lettering around the top, Corvette script below and a set of checkered and American flags in the middle. GM legal pointed out that the US code suggested the American flag ‘should never be used for advertising’.

Not that anybody has ever adhered to that, but Earl opted to rather use a bowtie and a fleur-de-lis.

Often associated with the French, the fleur-de-lis is also said to be a Greek symbol of virility. The crossed flags badge was on the first Corvette and has adorned every one since. And it’s developed every model since too, with five variations across the C1 Corvette alone. As time went on, the bezel was dropped, the flags changed, and the badge developed. Same applied for the C2 Corvette, those flags just kept on evolving.

The bezel also returned and disappeared again over time, but the badge generally comprised the checkers to one side and the bowtie and fleur de lis on the other. They swapped sides too, mind you, but the current C8 badge is a subtle development of the C7’s. It’s steep vee-shaped Chevron has two steeply staggered flag arms. Black and white checkers to the left and a gold filled bowtie and the fleur de lis sharing the two elements of the stagger on the left, on red.
