What do you do when you can’t defer a lifelong dream any longer because you’re running out of time? For one Redditor, it meant using the power of the media to fulfill his dying father’s final wish.
Fortunately, Jay Leno saw and heeded the call for help. Here’s how he helped Larry Webb fulfill the dream of a lifetime. It also gave Webb’s son Colby and the rest of his family a beautiful memory of his dad to cherish forever.
Colby Webb Has a Dream for His Dying Father
Larry Webb’s 70th birthday wasn’t the happiest at first. He lay in his hospital bed as an aggressive form of bile duct cancer ravaged his body. He turned to his son, Colby, and asked, “When do I get to see the new Corvette C8 2020 on the road?”
The vehicle, which goes from 0 to 60 mph in only 2.9 seconds, tops out at 194 mph. The mid-engine configuration gives drivers outstanding views of the road ahead, a typical issue in low-riding sports cars. The V8 engine is a thing of beauty to behold through the rear-hatch window. This car is a beast — a genuine powerhouse that’s affordable for the working class.
However, all of this happened before the C8 Corvette arrived in dealer lots and Webb wasn’t going to last that long. The disappointment in his father’s eyes told Colby that he had to try to do something to make his dad’s dying wish a reality.
He and his wife reached out to GM and Midway Chevrolet, who offered to bring one in so that Larry Webb could enjoy a private viewing. Little did he know that celebrity Jay Leno would take Webb for the ride of his life.
Larry Webb Enjoys the Ride of a Lifetime
Leno was the first person outside of GM officials to drive the 2020 Corvette C8. The second civilian to hold that honor? No other than Larry Webb.
Leno had Webb and his family flown to Los Angeles for the historic event. Webb had no idea what the trip held in store. Leno picked Webb up at the airport and took him for a cruise through sunny southern California with the top down, and the wind in his hair as Leno hit the gas.
Back at the garage, Leno and GM presented Webb with the factory sketch for the vehicle design and a coin reserved only for those who attended the unveiling. Leno took Webb through a tour of the various other impressive vehicles to wrap up a motorhead’s perfect day.
Larry Webb died less than two weeks after filming completed for the episode of “Leno’s Garage.” The excursion gave his son Colby and other surviving family members a memory to cherish. They gave their dad the gift of living his dream — there’s no more caring way to honor a father.
The World Needs More Acts of Kindness Like Leno’s
The world can be unfair. Sometimes, the most unfortunate things happen to the best people. However, with the love and support of family and caring strangers alike, we can light up the darkness and make life a little sweeter for those who have had a hard row.
