Hot Take: Chevy Should Get Rid of the C8 Z51 Spoiler

The standard C8 Corvette rear spoiler is simply a rude interruption of an elegant design. It should be eliminated.

As a car designer, I’m so incredibly disappointed by the usage of the out-of-place, unsavory spoiler design for the new Corvette. And I strongly believe the overall design of the C8 is significantly more powerful and sleek without the standard spoiler.

If you ask any car designer about the three most important aspects of designing an automobile, the answer would be: proportions, proportions, and proportions. And GM has pretty much gotten that spot-on with every Corvette they’ve designed. Classically beautiful silhouette, strong hips and a striking stance, and everything in between. And the C8 is no exception, despite having a mid-engine layout.

The real reason why that Z51 spoiler design doesn’t quite match the rest of the car is simple. It was designed as an afterthought. Which is why it looks like it doesn’t belong. This is most apparent in how the spoiler awkwardly connects to the body in all three contact points. And the center of the spoiler dips down to follow the shape of the rear. Which goes against every conventional idea of a rear wing or spoiler. Both aerodynamically, and aesthetically.

In truth, the C8 is simply a more successful design with an uninterrupted and beautiful mid-engine shape. Not to say that those high wings need to go as well, though. That rear wing design is actually a way better compliment to the silhouette and overall character of the Corvette. Not to mention, it provides aerodynamic assistance for those who like to drive their Corvettes closer to the limit.

The design of the basic Z51 spoiler was an early topic of discussion when the C8 was first revealed. And it’s safe to say that not many folks have been big fans. Now I realize that with time, we’ve grown used to it. And perhaps we forgive it because of the car’s capabilities. But General Motors designers have an opportunity to right a wrong here. They have a chance to make their great design even better by getting rid of that spoiler altogether.

What do you folks think? We’d love to hear from you right here in the forum.
