Does Owning a Corvette Make You a Target for Rude Comments?
Young Corvette owner expresses frustration over jealous stranger comments, and he certainly isn’t alone.
Most of us have worked hard to get where we are in life. Yes, you earned the right to buy yourself something nice, in this case a Corvette. But there’s also a downside to owning nice things – other people are bound to voice their jealousy in various ways. That was certainly the case with Corvette Forum member R8Z51. He apparently deals with rude comments from random strangers quite a bit. Which made him wonder aloud – is this the case with all Corvette owners?
“Any other young people on this forum get smart *** comments made by folks since you own a Corvette or any other nice vehicle? I was getting out of my Z06 today and some jack *** stated how it ‘must be nice driving around in dad’s car’ even though I purchased it myself in full with MY money. What do these people hope to achieve by making these remarks?”
We can certainly see where this sort of thing might be frustrating. And, of course, several other members suggest simply brushing it off. But ssmith512 goes into a little more detail explaining these kinds of comments.
“It’s simple. Some people are VERY insecure and can’t stand see some young, driven, responsible, hard working individual enjoying the fruits of their own labor. They are projecting their own disappointment in themselves onto you by making those jealous remarks. World is full of losers who constantly make bad decisions, yet can’t stand seeing others that are succeeding in life through responsibility, hard work, and intelligent decision making. Enjoy your Corvette and ignore the haters!!”
The OP obviously isn’t alone on the forum, either. In fact, jipper has gone through the same thing.
“Corvettes are icons, and with them comes a certain stigma…good and bad. But you are driving the car for you, not them. I am 37 and just got my first. I’ve wanted one since I was 14, and I could care less what anyone thinks or says, this car was something I worked for. I had $250k in MBA loans and have paid them down in 6 years post graduating. I’m at a point in life now where I can afford this car, because I worked for it. I’m not going to let some jealous person damper any of my joy. In the words of Taylor Swift, shake it off.”
This thread is filled with lots of similar stories, unfortunately. It’s pretty clear that Corvette ownership makes you a target for silly, unnecessary comments, especially if you’re on the younger side. So we want to know – have you ever had to deal with this sort of thing? Head over here and tell us your story, or just help the OP manage his problem by adding your own advice to the thread!
