Corvette Spy Shots: C8 Z06 Photographed with a Big Wang

Some say this could be a further-out prototype, but we’re probably looking at the 2021 or 2022 C8 Corvette Z06.

Hot off the spy-shot presses, folks. Photographers captured another heavily-camouflaged C8 prototype vehicle. And because there are rumors about the C8-generation Corvette Z06 receiving active aero and/or a center-exit exhaust set up, these photos have some wondering if this is a different prototype, perhaps the rumored hybrid C8 “E-Ray.” And while there’s no way of officially knowing what C8 prototype we’re looking at, given various delays and the schedule of how GM releases Corvettes, we’re pretty sure this is the Z06.

Front Fascia

First, let’s talk about the front fascia. As CorvetteForum predicted in its C8 renders, Chevrolet appears to have increased the air inlets on the front bumpers, most likely for additional coolers. Next, you’ll not the raised hump in the center of the frunk/hood, which we suspect will contain a visual nod to the C8.R racecar as did previous-generation Z06 models.

Side Scoop

Given the differences between the base model C8 and the C8.R, we’ve been hoping that Chevrolet would not only widen the C8 Z06’s rear end and quarter panels, but also the large side scoops that integrate into the driver and passenger doors. As you can see, GM has taken extra efforts to hide this shape as well as any active intakes that may be hidden underneath.

Wheels & Tires

Looking closely at the wheels and tires, the spy photographers believe the fronts are 275/30ZR20 spec Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 r compound tires. And, while the rears aren’t as clear, “The huge rear tires visible on these latest spy shots could definitely be a match for the 345/25/ZR21 rubber rumored for the Z06.  The disguised wheels could be hiding carbon fiber wheels.”

I think this one’s going to be decisive. Chevrolet currently can’t keep up with the demand for the high-wing option on the Z51 C8, but this might just be the biggest big wang in Corvette history. Our spy photographer says it a little bit like the CZ ZR1, but I’d argue it looks like a C7 Z06 wing if it were able to hover over the rear end. It’s also a bit like what would happen if you took a Corvette emblem and turned it into a spoiler.

Now, this also leaves folks wondering about the rumored C8 Z06 active aero. Does this big wang mean that’s off the table, or is part of a Z07 package, or that it will be reserved for a ZR1? We can’t say.
