YouTuber Mike Davenport uses his OnStar app to make contact with his C8 ‘Vette & learns his spare wheels don’t come with tires.
For many who ordered their C8 Corvette, the anticipation of receiving the first mid-engine ‘Vette is at a fever pitch. It won’t be long until each and every one of their cars are loaded up onto haulers, then carried away from the nursery in Bowling Green, Kentucky to the wide world outside.
Some owners, though, are more eager to see their cars now than others. Such is the case with YouTuber Mike Davenport (a.k.a. Chevy Dude). The Louisville, Kentucky-based Chevy dealer recently rolled down to Bowling Green to try to see his new C8. Alas, bad news would await back home.
“I’m going to go down to Bowling Green today,” said Davenport. “We’re going to see if we can locate my car […] We’re going to attempt to maybe get inside the fence legally, without breaking any laws. I’m going to ask. If they say yes, sweet. If they say no, then, that’s gonna be it.”
Davenport also promises he won’t do anything “goofy” or “stupid” to see his car, but he’ll do something “goofy” to track down where his ride is instead. We’re getting ahead of ourselves, though.
“Alright, guys. We are here,” said Davenport upon arrival at the Bowling Green plant. “Check it out. There is a sea of white out there. But, if you look, there’s a sea of color, as well, which is pretty interesting. We’re gonna see if we can locate my car.”
Before attempting to find his and his friend’s car, though, Davenport and his other friend happen upon a pair of pre-production C8 Corvettes parked next to a red C5. One is in Elkhart Blue on all-seasons, the other is in Long Beach Red with the Z51 package. That may sound like trouble waiting to happen, as the package includes summer-only tires. However, this car had Michelin Alpine Pilot winter tires applied. Thus, Davenport believes this is good news for anyone who wants to drive their cars year-round, and don’t live in warmer climates.
“They were very, very courteous,” said Davenport. “They said that we can’t go in there […] but we do know where my car is. I would think, based off of this, it’s more over behind these trucks. We’re gonna have a little fun here.”
Turns out his OnStar app not only knows where his C8 is, but he can activate the horn and lights to try to find his car. Which he does, likely spooking anyone at the plant moving the cars into place. He even gets his friend, Andrew Zurick of Complete Street Peformance, to use his app to find his own Corvette, though to no avail.
That would not be the only disappointment for Davenport, however. Back at Bachman Chevrolet in Louisville’s East End, he learned he ordered his C8 wrong, costing him $2,600. What happened?
“There you go. There is the trident-spoke accessory wheels, [in] black,” said Davenport. “You can also get them in pewter and silver. Looks pretty awesome. I can’t wait to spin them on my car.”
Said wheels are a $2,600 option, according to Davenport. However, the wheels don’t come mounted on tires from the factory. Instead, he’ll have to fork over an additional $1,600 to do what he believes the factory should have done.
“This is an LT Suburban,” said Davenport. “See the wheels? Let’s walk up here. We added these wheels. They’re $2,995. This is a dealer add-on. We added these rims because a lot of people want rims. When we get these tires and wheel package[s], it’s a rim, it’s the lug nuts, it’s the wheels, it’s the tire pressure monitors. It’s mounted and balanced, ready to go.”
The same 22-inch wheel package is available on the Tahoe LT he also brings into the discussion, Davenport says. He adds the SUVs arrive on steelies, which are then swapped out and sent back to the factory, while the new wheel-and-tire package is mounted. Thus, while Silverado owners can roll on a full set for $395 more than the Corvette’s accessory wheels, C8 owners will have to fork over more cash just to have some rubber.
