Changing C6 Corvette Differential Fluid: Easier than You Think
YouTuber Matt De Lima goes through the steps needed to make sure your C6 Corvette’s rear diff is moving fluidly with the road.
There’s no time like the present to give your Corvette the proper maintenance it needs when the world comes back to life once again. You might not be able to dyno your ‘Vette, but you can swap in that supercharger you’ve been meaning to do for a while now. A fresh set of tires will certainly improve your driving pleasure, too.
Speaking of that particular area, you’ll likely want to change out the rear differential fluid, too. YouTuber Matt De Lima (a.k.a, Matty’s Garage) shows you how with his own red C6 Corvette.
“Today, we’re gonna change the diff fluid of my 2007 Corvette,” said De Lima. “It’s a 2007 base model. I don’t know if the Z06 or ZR1 are the same — I believe they are — but be sure to check before you go […] GM recommends 75W-90 gear oil. Also, we’re gonna need a pump, since the diff is really hard to get into.”
Once he has his C6 fully jacked up and leveled out, De Lima goes to work loosening the drain plug on the rear diff. He says to let the differential drain for 30 minutes, just to make sure the old gear oil is completely gone. After that, come back to re-tighten the plug for the next step.
“Now, we’re gonna use the fluid itself and the pump,” said De Lima. “Without the pump, I don’t know how we’re gonna [get it in there]. You definitely need your pump. Just pump it away.”
And pump he does, sending the new gear oil into the diff. It’s a tedious process, but he eventually pumps enough oil home that some starts dripping out. Thus, it’s full, and ready for the final step.
“We found this huge parking lot here,” said De Lima. “I’m gonna do [a figure-eight] eight times just to make sure the diff gets everything it needs as far as mixing, because it’s brand new.”
De Lima takes his Corvette through a slow set of figure-eights, getting the gears coated thoroughly. And just like that, his car is good to go.
