C8 Corvette vs C7 Corvette: Which One Sounds the Best?

C8 Corvette vs C7 Corvette Exhaust Sound

Among the many C8 Corvette vs C7 Corvette comparisons, their respective sound might be the most interesting of all.

Every time a new Corvette generation bows, enthusiasts are quick to compare new versus old, as well as pit the newcomer against every competitor imaginable. This is especially true of the C8 Corvette vs C7 Corvette comparisons, mostly because they’re so radically different. The C8 represents a massive departure from every Corvette generation that preceded it, thanks to the long awaited switch to a mid-engine layout, so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

However, one C8 Corvette vs C7 Corvette comparison we had yet to see, until now, relates to how each car sounds. But this short clip from AWE, makers of aftermarket exhaust kits, puts an end to that oversight. One might think that the two engines would sound somewhat similar, thanks to the fact that they share a lot in common. However, that isn’t really the case at all.

To make this comparison fair, both cars are equipped with AWE’s Touring Edition exhaust. The “old timer” C7 kicks things off with a few revs, and it sounds pretty awesome. Its 6.2-liter LT1 V8 emits a deep, throaty sound that personifies the American V8 perfectly. It’s also a sound that has endeared many people to Chevy’s iconic small block over the many years it’s been in production.

On the flip side, we have the C8 Corvette and its 6.2-liter LT2 V8, which is an evolutionary step forward from the C7’s LT1. But despite the fact that these two engines are very similar in almost every measurable way, the newer powerplant sounds quite a bit different. It emits a higher-pitched, raspier sound that’s more exotic in a way, which is somewhat surprising. That could certainly have something to do with the fact that its exhaust is obviously much shorter, thanks to the mid-engine layout.

As far as which one sounds the best, well, that’s a subjective question. Some will undoubtedly prefer the classic, deep V8 rumble of the C7 Corvette, while others might lean toward the C8’s exotic sounds. We think they both sound good, and find ourselves having a hard time picking a clear winner. But in the end, the real winner, at least in our opinion, are Corvette owners, because both of these cars are truly special in their own unique way.
