C8 Corvette versus Lamborghini Huracan

Lamborghini takes the win, but the Corvette puts up an amazing fight for a car with far less power.

When the C8 Chevrolet Corvette was introduced with the engine mounted behind the driver, it was immediately compared to the rest of the mid-engine performance cars around the world. The problem with that comparison is that the other mid-engine performance cars sold in the United States are high-priced European supercars. To some, comparing the C8 Corvette Stingray to something like a Lamborghini Huracan is unrealistic. The Huracan comes with far more stock power and it costs more than four times as much as the Stingray.

However, the video below from Hennessey Performance shows that a C8 Stingray with very minimal modifications will put up an impressive fight against a stock Lamborghini Huracan.

Tale of the Tape

The C8 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray in the video below is the Hennessey shop car. It is fitted with a stainless steel exhaust system that lifts the output to 510 horsepower. We don’t know the exact torque number, but it is somewhere north of 470 lb-ft. It is also equipped with lightweight wheels and sticky Hoosier “race tires”. We don’t know which Hoosier tires this Corvette is running. Anything from Hoosier is better than the stock C8 street tires. In short, this Stingray has a little more power than stock and it offers better traction than stock. This Stingray, without a driver, should weight right around 3,500 pounds.

We don’t know exactly what trim level this Lamborghini Huracan is, but it appears to be an LP610-4. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 with 602 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels by means of a 7-speed dual clutch automatic and advanced all-wheel-drive system. The LP610-4 Coupe has a curb weight of roughly 3,400 pounds.

In summary, the Lamborghini has more an advantage of over 100 horsepower, it has all-wheel-drive and it weighs around 100 pounds less than the C8. The Corvette has an advantage in torque, but between the horsepower, weight and traction advantage, this seems like a tough race for the Stingray.

Oh, it should also be noted that the Lamborghini Huracan LP610-4 has a starting price around $263,000. The Corvette starts just under $60,000, so the Huracan costs about four times as much.

The Track Battles

The video begins with the Huracan and C8 Corvette racing from a dig. Neither car uses launch control and they appear to go when the Stingray moves. In other words, the C8 gets a bit of a head start, but this is a base Corvette against an all-wheel-drive Lamborghini. The Stingray pulls away early on, even when the Huracan is moving, but the Lambo begins to close by the halfway point in the battle. In the end, the Huracan inches ahead just as the two hit the finish line. The Italian supercar beats the base Chevrolet Corvette, but only by a very small margin.

Next, the two go from a roll. They approach the starting cone at 40 miles per hour and hit at the same time. The issue with this race is that the Corvette is in second gear while the Huracan is in fourth gear. Because of that, the Lamborghini has to shift before it can get up to speed, giving the C8 a chance to build an early lead. Once the big bull gets moving, it once again catches and passes the Stingray just before the finish line.

While the C8 Corvette lost both of these races, it is racing against a Lamborghini that costs four times as much. The Lambo also has an advantage of more than a hundred horsepower and has all-wheel-drive. Even with that all in mind, the Stingray barely loses in a dig and a roll, showing that the new Corvette really is the best performance bargain in the world today.
