C8 Corvette Holds up Exceptionally Well in Serious Crash

While safety isn’t the first thing most C8 Corvette buyers are concerned with, it’s nice to know that it’s there.

Understandably, most people are concerned with the way cars like the C8 Corvette look, perform, and feel. Rarely do sports car buyers think about things like safety, regardless of how important it might be. Of course, getting in a serious accident isn’t the most likely thing to happen, but if it does happen, it’s nice to know that we’ll be protected. And this unfortunate C8 Corvette crash provides pretty solid proof that we will be.

The owner of this particular C8 – Carlton Phillips – recently posted his story and some pictures to the Facebook group The Chevy Under Glass. And while it’s always sad to see one of these cars wrecked, we imagine that Phillips is just thankful he’s able to tell his story following an accident that could have turned out much, much worse.

Instead of complaining or expressing sadness over losing his beloved Corvette, Phillips took the time to praise its safety structure and the GM engineers that designed it. He then went on to describe the miraculous results of his unfortunate crash with an oncoming minivan. “The car orchestrated every maneuver I used to avoid the impending accident, and with only the choice of a pole or t-boning another vehicle, I chose the car,” Phillips said.

Phillips obviously expected the worst here, but was surprised with a much different sort of impact. “The impact felt as if I had casually bumped a curb in a full-size SUV and I’ve been in a more violent impact in bumper cars at an amusement park,” he said. Phillips didn’t even realize how much damage had been done to the car until he stepped out after speaking with OnStar, which helped him call 911.

Only after he had finally recovered from the initial shock of what happened did Phillips notice how crumpled up his C8 Corvette was. “The car had transferred the entire force of the impact diagonally across the front end of the car, shut itself off, and turned on the emergency flashers for me,” he said. “We all survived because the C8 took one for the team and sacrificed itself for all of us on that night.”

It’s a sad tale for sure, but at the same time, it’s nice to have a little real-life confirmation that these cars are incredibly safe to drive. That hasn’t historically always been the case with sports cars, nor has it always been a focus from manufacturers. But the C8 isn’t your typical sports car by any stretch of the imagination.
