C8 Corvette vs McLaren 650S Track Battle

After taking the slalom showdown, this C8 goes toe-to-toe with a 650S in two drag races and on some hot laps.

The C8 Corvette has already proven that it’s capable of punching far above its weight class, putting up a good fight against all sorts of much more expensive and powerful exotic machinery. That includes more than one McLaren, of course. The latest example of this comes to us from Track Attack Canada, which was recently able to pit a C8 with the Z51 package against a McLaren 650S on a cold, wet day at Toronto Motorsports Park.

There are a couple of caveats worth noting here, however. This C8 has been treated to GM’s factory recommended track alignment, but it’s also running a brand new set of Yokohama Advan Apex V601 tires. With that said, the two cars square off in a number of battles, beginning with a slalom challenge.

Track Attack Canada came away impressed with the improvements the track alignment provided, including the way the car rotated so easily compared to the way it performs with the stock alignment. The Corvette’s tires helped it out in the wet conditions as well, helping it win this battle by over a second.

A pair of drag races produce different results, however. The McLaren’s far superior power-to-weight ratio helped it win both from a dig and a roll, though the C8 jumped out on it in the first race a bit. Thus, the only thing left to do is take both of these impressive cars out on the track for some hot laps to see how they compare there.

And the answer to that question is quite close. The McLaren finishes with a best lap time of 1:21.0 versus the Corvette’s 1:22.2. In the world of racing, a second is a significant amount of time, but we’re impressed that the C8 kept up as well as it did with the much more expensive, lighter, and more powerful car.

Even better, in warmer and drier conditions, the Corvette has run an even faster 1:16.9 at the same track – good enough to beat a Lamborghini Huracan, Cayman GT4, and Camaro ZL1 1LE. Thus, we’re looking forward to seeing this same race re-run, perhaps on a nicer summer day.
