One yellow C5 Corvette got its chance to stretch out in its first-ever track day in Upstate New York.

Taking a Corvette of any kind out to the track is a day to remember. There’s nothing like hearing the V8 sing its song of fire and ice through the straights and chicanes. Not to mention the fun you and your ‘Vette experience acting together as a single unit of domination. Not much could top such a time, whether it’s a C5, a C8, or a C1 ‘Vette.

Except, of course, for your first time. Recently, YouTuber Ken Torreggiani of Low Boost Films took his new-to-him 2003 C5 Corvette to its first track day at New York Safety Track in Jefferson, New York, some three hours north of the Big Apple. Let’s see how they do on this special day.

Better Than an M235i

“COVID or no COVID, I am going to make sure that I do more track days this year than any other year that I’ve done,” said Torreggiani. “Now that I have a C5 Corvette, we can do it […] we’re doing a track day.”

On this day, Torreggiani and his C5 spent its first session passing a friend in a BMW M3. Said friend was only happy to see him pass, letting “a bird” fly out of his window while the yellow ‘Vette cruised on by.

Torreggiani knocked out a 1:46 on the first go, which he says took him all day in a BMW M235i the last time around. Other than some softness and body roll concerns, though, his C5 had grip for days.

The C5 Looks Great from Behind, Too

“I am really excited that I was able to get this footage from my friend Miguel in his Ariel Atom,” said Torreggiani. “You don’t normally get to see what your car looks like on the track when somebody’s behind you. I was able to do two laps with him to really kinda get an idea of what the car looks like.”

Turns out his C5 is a big improvement over the BMW he ran in the past. The limited-slip diff allows Torreggiani to exits turns “really hard,” whereas his BMW wouldn’t have been down for that. The ‘Vette logged another 1:46 while leading the Atom’s driver through his first time at NYST. Again, body roll issues drew the YouTuber’s attention, though the insane tire grip balanced things out.

“Second session in, I’ve already set my best time ever at this track with this car,” said Torreggiani, “which says a lot.”

And that best time? Only 1:42.7 on a flying lap in the C5. Torreggiani improved his cornering with the ‘Vette, while also rocking wide open with no traffic in sight. He certainly couldn’t do that in the BMW, where he managed a 1:43. All that awaits for him now is improvements to dampen body roll, and repairs to his power steering pump, which wasn’t ready for track day.

All in all, not a bad day out for the yellow C5’s first day running free.
