C2 Corvette Crushes Supercars on the Track: Flashback Friday
C2 Corvette with a twin-turbocharged 1990s LT1 gets to 176 miles per hour in a standing half-mile.
If you have ever been to a Shift Sector event, or any other type of side-by-side top speed event, you have likely seen plenty of Chevrolet Corvette race cars laying down incredible numbers. However, you aren’t likely to see many C2 Corvettes at those events, unless it is the unique machine shown here. This unusual 1967 Corvette was captured by 1320Video participating in a Shift Sector event in Colorado. Relying on the relatively unloved LT1 from the 1990s, this classic Chevy beats all comers. This includes supercars from Lamborghini and McLaren.
Twin Turbo, LT1 C2 Corvette
The gorgeous black C2 Corvette featured in this video is owned and driven by a guy named Kyle. He owned this car years ago, sold it, then bought it back with a damaged motor. His two teenage sons talked him into building a twin-turbo beast and the result is the stunning piece of high-performance machinery shown here.
While many people building a twin-turbo C2 Corvette would opt for something from the LS or modern LT family, the owner of this car went with an LT1 from the previous era. These engines don’t get much credit when compared to the LS1, but as this video shows, a well-built LT1 can still make big power. In fact, with the twin 62-millimeter turbochargers and a Holley Dominator engine management system, this classic ‘Vette is making around 900 horsepower on 18 to 20 pounds of boost pressure.
That power is sent to the rear wheels by means of a 200R4 transmission from a Buick Grand National. This transmission was chosen because the tunnel in the C2 is too small for the other popular transmissions. The 200R4 was picked for its small size.
Part of what makes this 1967 Corvette so cool is the fact that it looks more or less stock, but it is capable of out-running modern supercars in a half-mile top speed duel. In fact, it is capable of out-running everything that lines up at the Colorado Shift Sector event back in 2018.
C2 Versus the World
The first race shows the 1967 Corvette taking on a C7 Z06 and the classic walks away, reaching a top speed of 164.53 miles per hour while the newer car reached “only” 142.22. Next, a Hellcat Charger is bested in the slowest run of the video for the C2, running a 157.01. We don’t know why the classic Chevy was so much slower on that run. On the next pass against a Mustang GT, he got back up to 164.11.
Next up, the 1967 Corvette battles a Lamborghini Huracan. On the start, the classic Chevy is out and front and from there, the Italian supercar just keeps falling behind. On the top end, the C2 lays down a 175.98, beating the Lambo by nearly 30 miles per hour.
Finally, the classic Corvette takes on a new McLaren and the results are similar to the race with the Huracan. The old school Chevy gets out better and walks away, hitting a top speed of 176.19 miles per hour.
