2020 Corvette Sells for Shockingly Low, Near-MSRP Price at Auction

Is this “cheap” 2020 Corvette a sign that the market is cooling off or just an anomaly amid changing seasons?

In recent months, quite a few 2020 Corvette owners have taken advantage of the car’s low supply and high demand by selling their cars for a tidy profit. We’ve seen several C8s going for a hefty premium over their sticker price, both by dealers and private profiteers, with a few listed at what we’d classify as crazy prices. So we were more than a little surprised to see this 2020 Corvette Z51 2LT hammer for a mere $82,000 over at Doug DeMuro‘s new auction site, Cars & Bids.

To put that number in perspective, the original MSRP of this car was $80,260, so somebody got one heck of a deal given the state of the current market. Granted, it isn’t brand new like some of the ones we’ve seen crossing the block lately, but the car still has only 5,400 miles on the clock. And that hasn’t seemed to matter much to buyers clamoring to get their hands on the latest and greatest Corvette, anyway.

The buyer likely wasn’t expecting this result, given their comments as to why they were motivated to sell the car in the first place. “It seems like a good time to sell an early C8 as they are still very rare,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed it. I move cars in and out of my garage regularly, all for personal use and enjoyment. Feels like a win-win.” We’re not so sure we’d call this a win for anyone other than the buyer, to be honest.

As for why this particular car couldn’t muster a massive profit for the seller in the red hot market, well, we can only speculate. Perhaps the market is slowing down a bit, and folks are placing orders for 2021 Corvettes instead of seeking out 2020s. Or maybe it’s just the fact that we’re moving into fall, a time when sports car sales tend to taper off.  Or, perhaps this was just an anomaly that won’t be repeated any time soon. Who knows?

Only time will tell, but the 2020 Corvette market was eventually going to taper off regardless, if it hasn’t already. Those that paid dearly for the privilege of being an early adopter will soon feel the sting of watching cars go for at or less than MSRP as GM cranks out more and more examples to level off demand. And maybe, just maybe, those of us who have been waiting patiently will be rewarded for it.
