Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus…and He Drives a Corvette

Santa's C7 Corvette

What? Did you think he was naturally that jolly? No, Santa loves a ‘Vette and we’ve got the proof!

We think it is high time that we reveal a long-held secret: Santa Claus is real. And he drives a Corvette.

Now, it may seem implausible that our ever jolly Saint Nick could deliver all those toys in a Stingray. And that is true. Obviously, he doesn’t use his Corvette for work! It’s not really a practical daily driver for the big show. But he’s probably behind the wheel of his favorite Z06 or C8 the other 364 days a year.

Caught In The Act

Recently, we came across a story on Alabama.com that shows Santa in his sweet C7 Corvette. Santa Steve Pennington of Birmingham has been spreading much holiday cheer throughout the area for many years. With 2020 changing the rules, Santa Steve–known for his music-filled appearances–had had to adjust, but he presses on. He has continued with appearances that adhere to Covid-19 guidelines. Our big man is still spreading Christmas magic.

But, he’s Santa with an edge. “I’m the rule-breaker of Santas,” he says. “While Santa is an iconic, legendary figure, he’s also a real person. I think Santa needs to be portrayed as real.” And what is more real than loving a Corvette? He shows up to all his events driving his red C7 Corvette.
“It’s a great effect for Santa to step out of a red Corvette with a Santa tag,” says the great bearded one.

His red sleigh even rocks vanity plates that read: “SANTA8” as a shout-out to his reindeer squad.

Even cooler is how he got the Corvette. A couple of years ago, Santa Steve purchased his sleek red C7 Corvette with money he made from selling a rare edition of an Amazing Fantasy #15 comic book he bought in 1973 and kept locked away in a safe deposit box.

And His Santa’s Little Helpers, Too

Meanwhile, other members of the holly jolly crew have also been spotted driving slick ‘Vettes and spreading goodwill. The North Idaho Corvette Club helped a great cause with their 2020 High Performance Toy Corvette Drive to benefit Toys for Tots of North Idaho. Of course Santa wants the kiddos to have a cool Corvette under the tree!

Theirs is a toy drive is with a strong focus on Corvettes. The toy drive is “something different and exciting, as kids love toy Corvettes and Corvettes are a timeless, iconic part of American History,” the club says, adding that their goal is “to make a lot of kids happy on Christmas morning with a cool toy Corvette.”

In addition to raising funds, and accepting donated toys; they got a grant from Makers Mark Bourbon to purchase $500 in toy Corvettes from the National Corvette Museum.

And what were the big sellers? The club said basically “all different model years, and pink ones for the girls; especially the Barbie Pink Corvette.”

If you needed more, we think this classic ad for Hertz has it. Released in 1968, the ad shows our bowl-full-of-jelly guy leaving that sleigh behind for a much better ride.

Good call, big man.

Santa Claus and Corvette are both spun from the stuff of legends, and the pairing does ignite our imagination. Automotive designer Javier Oquendo took this idea and went with it. His rendering of a C8 widebody doing some North Pole drifts is as tasty as a a plate of milk and cookies.

So, we rest our case. Of course the coolest man to ever slide down a chimney drives the coolest car! They both spread the spirit of the season, kindness, and excitement everywhere they go.

Both cause hearts to pump a little faster, and feel a little more. And both inspire sheer joy the mere mention of their names. Beloved by kids and adults alike: Santa Claus and Corvette are two icons that just go together.
