Would You Order a C8 Corvette and Not Tell Your Spouse About It?

CorvetteForum member orders a C8 Corvette without telling his wife, then heads to the forums for advice.

We always chuckle when we see those holiday TV ads where couples buy cars for each other. Mainly because, well, not a lot of folks make such big financial commitments without consulting their spouse. Mainly because they are looking to stay married. So we were a bit surprised to come across this thread over in our forums recently, where member Mountaintopless was seeking help after ordering a C8 Corvette in “secret.”

“I talked to a dealer in October 2020 about a C8 Corvette. They called me in early December and I placed an order on 12/22/20, now at status 2,000. I did not think this process would move so quickly but it leads me to a big problem. I have not discussed this with my wife. We retired a year ago and bought a travel trailer. At that point, she told me I have all the vehicles I need for the rest of my life!

I have never spent this much on any vehicle in the past, so I am very frightened to tell her it may soon be here in the next few months. We have the money, but she is ultra-conservative and has been saving all her life. Her opinion on cars is they have four wheels and get you from point A to point B, and as long as they keep running you hold on to them for dear life! I could use some sage advice on how to not become the first homeless person with a C8.”

Most that respond to this post are in obvious shock that anyone would make such a big decision without telling their wife, but Phanni has a simple and obvious piece of advice for the OP.

“It’s too late now, you made your bed, now you gotta live with it. I don’t know how long you’ve been married, but I’ve been married 51 years, and I’d never make a large purchase without at least pretending she has input into the final decision. ‘Fess’ up, tell her what you’ve done, and hope for the best.”

That’s probably the best piece of advice, but there are some others that may not be advisable, but they are quite hilarious.

“Just tell her it’s a December to Remember,” said EasyLivin.

“I can see the ad title now… ‘Divorce Forces Sale.’ You could sell it for a profit and come out looking like a hero,” said The Successful Plumber.

Interestingly enough, the OP also isn’t the only one who’s ordered a car without telling their wife. But as Grey points out, it may cost you more than you bargained for.

“Welcome to the club guy. I ordered my new C8 Corvette the day after they became available. Three weeks later my wife saw the write-ups and ad campaigns. She came to my office and said ‘you collect mid-engine cars, you should think about one of those.’ I said ‘I’m glad you agree I ordered it three weeks ago.’ Well, that cost me an extra 45 grand for the new kitchen. So you may as well enjoy it. I’m still laughing, myself.”

After a while, the OP decided to take the advice he had received and broke the news to his wife…gently.

“With all the great feedback I received from other forum members, I was able to formulate a letter to my wife and lovingly place it inside a beautiful greeting card that had a towering waterfall against a stunning mountain backdrop. In the letter, I spoke about the dreams of little girls and little boys, and how even though both were typically different, both were equally important. She now has her dream home and dream kitchen, which is something many little girls fantasize about. I shared with her my boyhood fascination with cars and the dream of a supercar like Magnum PI had at some point in my life.”

After giving the card to his wife, a few hours went by before she came out and gave the OP an answer – “I understand honey, go ahead and get the Corvette. Can I help pick the colors?”

So this story has a happy ending, at least. But this thread is definitely worth the read, and we’d suggest checking out all the humorous responses and the entire story by heading over here!
