Ultra-Rare 1967 Corvette L88 Rakes in Nearly $2.7 Million at Auction
One of just 20 produced and still equipped with its original engine, this special 1967 Corvette L88 is certainly worthy.
There are many rare and special Corvettes in the sports car’s illustrious history, but few match up to the mighty L88. GM’s destroyer of motorsports records was also produced in scant quantities for road use, including just 20 built for the 1967 model year. Today, cars like this beautiful Sunfire Yellow 1967 Corvette L88 always rake in big money when they go up for sale, and this one is no exception to that rule.
This super special 1967 Corvette L88 hammered for a staggering $2.695 million at Mecum’s Glendale auction, which is obviously a lot, but it still fell short of a red L88 coupe that sold for $3.85 million back in 2014. We won’t exactly call it a bargain, but we’re sure the buyer isn’t terribly disappointed with this significant discount, especially in today’s red-hot classic car market.
This particular car is extra special as it’s the only L88 Corvette finished in Sunfire Yellow, and its 427 engine and trim tag have both been confirmed by Al Grenning’s Classic Car Affirmation Service as being factory original to the car.
That special engine is packing a host of factory upgrades, including a reinforced 4-bolt main cast-iron block, Tuftrided forged steel crank and connecting rods, 12.5:1 forged aluminum pistons, a solid-lifter camshaft, racing-developed high-flow aluminum heads, a Holley 850 four-barrel carburetor, and an open-plenum aluminum intake manifold. Output was hilariously underrated at 430 horsepower, but with the right fuel, it’s actually closer to 560 ponies.
Regular Production Option L88 also netted buyers GM’s F41 Special Suspension, J56 Heavy Duty disc brakes with J50 vacuum assist, Muncie’s M22 Rock Crusher four-speed gearbox, G81 Positraction rear axle, K66 Transistor Ignition with mechanical advance, Harrison heavy-duty cross-flow aluminum radiator, and a radio and heater delete.
Since the completion of its insane 10-year restoration, this car has raked in a host of awards, including Bloomington Gold Certification, participation in the L88 Explosion display at Bloomington Gold 2018, an NCRS Top Flight Award, NCRS Performance Verification, a Duntov Mark of Excellence Award, and Concours Gold, the Celebrity Pick Award, and Triple Diamond Certification at the 2018 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. It is the only 1967 L88 with its original engine to win both the Duntov and Triple Diamond awards.
Needless to say, this is a very special example of a very special car, and it deserved every penny of that nearly $2.7 million that it managed to bring at auction – and perhaps a bit more.
