The National Corvette Museum is Expanding

The proposed 30,000 square foot expansion includes room for new exhibits and a space for museum members.

For Corvette fanatics like us, visiting the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky borders on a religious experience. It’s a mecca for fans of wide tires, corner-carving suspensions, and good old-fashioned American horsepower. Soon, it’s going to get even bigger and better. Hallelujah.

According to the folks at Autoblog, the museum recently announced a 30,000 square foot expansion to the museum, which was originally built in 1994. The National Corvette Museum posted a video about the expansion on their YouTube channel. They posted a short video on Friday, April 23 outlining the proposed expansion.

The expansion, which will consist of two stories, will include space for additional exhibits. It will also provide a lounge for lifetime members of the museum, as well as a theater and an educational area for kids. You’ve got to start ’em on the righteous path while they’re still young.

The original museum space was 60,000 square feet, augmented in 2008 by a 47,000 square foot expansion. That expansion increased the size of the gift shop, and also contains the Corvette Café, the NCM library and archives, and an area for new Corvette deliveries.

Always Something New

It’s a large expansion, and quite an ambitious undertaking. The museum intends to raise funds for the construction by way of member donations, which, we’d like to point out, are tax deductible. After the infamous sinkhole incident back in 2014, Corvette fans rallied to repair and rebuild that part of the museum.

Corvette fans will certainly rally again to raise money for this new section, which will likely house more rotating displays and specialty exhibits. This will be great news for Corvette enthusiasts, as these rotating exhibits will encourage repeated visits. Obviously, this helps the museum as well.

This expansion is necessary any way you look at it. The National Corvette Museum was built just over 40 years after the birth of the Corvette. Over a quarter of a century has passed since then. That’s a lot more Corvette history to try to cram into that existing space. That said, they’ve done a great job so far – however, as any car enthusiast will tell you, a little extra garage space never hurt anybody.
