The dealership whose mechanic took a customer’s C8 street racing has more than redeemed itself with a generous act.

Earlier this month, we reported on a C8 owner’s horrific experience at a Chevrolet dealership that was, at the time, unresolved. After taking his Corvette in for service after his check engine light came on, the owner was shocked to learn, via footage recorded on the car’s Performance Data Recorder, that a technician at the dealership had been out street racing his ride, weaving in and out of traffic at speeds reaching 148 miles-per-hour. The dealership – Fremont Chevrolet in California – promised to make things right, and now, it seems as if they’ve done exactly that.

The Drive reached out to the C8’s owner, Michael, and learned that Freemont has agreed to go above and beyond what most would expect and trade him a brand new 2022 Corvette for his 2021 model, straight up. The dealer is even paying the sales tax on the new car, meaning that Michael won’t have to dish out a single penny to swap his used Corvette for a brand new one.

“The owner of the family of dealerships reached out to me…and I’m laying in bed and he texts me at nine at night or something, just apologizing profusely and saying he wants to make this right,” Michael told The Drive. “And then [he offers] me a 2022 [Corvette], and that was pretty shocking. I followed up with [the dealership’s general manager] the next morning and said ‘hey, when can we meet?’”

Even better, Michael didn’t just snag a new Corvette off the lot – he was able to go into the dealership and order a new one to his own specification. He was even able to add options like the front lift system and upgraded seats that he couldn’t get on his old car. And he gets to drive his 2021 Corvette until the new one arrives, to boot.

“After I saw the video, I felt this is the right thing to do,” Freemont Chevrolet’s owner, Inder Dosanjh, told The Drive. “I heard it, and then it was worse when I saw it. Until you see things, sometimes, you don’t really understand them. After my conversation with him, at some point, we said OK, why don’t we just trade your car in, [we’ll] take it back, give you one, and we’ll pay the sales tax. It’s not about the money, it’s not about anything else, we do good [financially], we’ve got enough stores. This is about fixing the problem right.”

Needless to say, Michael is very pleased with the outcome, and who can blame him? But in all fairness, this story caught major traction after he posted footage from the incident on Reddit, and it was obviously a very bad look for the dealership. Chances are, no one that owns a Corvette would ever dream of taking it there for service after seeing the way his car was treated, but we imagine this act of kindness will help the business restore its tarnished reputation.
