Rare Museum-Quality L88 Corvette Sells for OVER $600,000!
Tuxedo Black-on-black ’69 Corvette with L88 V8, one of 116 built that year, one of 216 overall, goes to a new home for $610,000.
What could you buy with $610,000? If you’re a Corvette fan, you could get a top-tier C8 3LT Z51, plus a house and garage to park it in (depending on the local housing market, anyway). If you already have a big house, though, you could buy a handful of C8s. Or, if you’re Rick Hendrick, almost a third of the C8 which went for $3 million at the 2020 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale happening.
Speaking of auctions, there is something else you can buy with $610,000. According to Corvette Blogger, that something is a museum-quality 1969 Corvette. This one, though, may well be worth the winning bid it earned at Bring a Trailer.
Blacker Than Black, Times Infinity
This early C3 is already special, being one of 116 built in ’69 with the L88 427 V8. It’s also among the 216 ever built over the option’s lifespan. Both the V8 and its Muncie M22 are numbers-matching units. Combined, the powertrain delivers 430 horsepower (or, perhaps, more than that) to the rear tires via the Positrac rear diff. To top it off, the whole affair wears Tuxedo Black over a black interior, trimmed in polished chrome.
A Gem with Nine Lives
What truly sets this L88 Corvette from the rest is the love and attention its received since its first owner took it home. A lot of it comes from Corvette restorer Kevin Mackay, who took the ‘Vette around to happenings around the country. A total of nine owners held onto this black beauty over the decades, contributing to its storybook.
If Only It Had a Trunk For Its Booty
And what a book it is! The result of its excellent care is a ton of awards bestowed upon it between 2005 and 2016. These awards include four NCRS Top Flight Awards, a pair of Bloomington Gold Certifications and a Bloomington Gold Survivor cert, and Concours Gold and Triple Diamond certs from MCACN. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
“The L88s that have come to live auction haven’t had motivated buyers or sufficiently motivated sellers,” Hagerty’s Greg Ingold told Corvette Blogger. However, should another L88 go big like this one, Ingold expects the block to pop off like never before. The Hagerty Price Guide lists such examples as this ‘Vette going for $425,000 on the market. Better sort out your bank accounts now.
