Man Steals C8 Corvette Right in Front of Salesperson (Doesn’t Get Far)
With an entire staff of dealership employees watching, this wannabe thief tried to make off with a new C8 Corvette.
Automotive theft has only gotten worse in recent years, mostly thanks to the fact that vehicles have only gotten more expensive. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of money to be made not only from entire modern vehicles but also their pricey, fancy parts. Regardless, most successful car thieves do their work in the shadows, but that certainly wasn’t the case with this C8 Corvette bandit that tried to score a new ride from a dealer. Luckily, the entire incident was caught on tape.
In the truly wild piece of footage, we can see what this Virginia-based Chevrolet dealership thought was a customer hop in the new C8 Corvette, start it up, and drive away as a salesperson attempts to stop them. What makes this incident even more unbelievable is the fact that a whole staff of employees was sitting there watching this happen in broad daylight, so we’re not sure how the thief thought they were going to get away with it.
The video was also posted in the Facebook group C8 Corvette Owners and Friends, where commenters provided a bit more information about what happened next. Apparently, the wannabe thief only made it about a mile from the dealership before they were caught, and luckily, the Corvette was apparently returned to the dealer in one piece.
Another commenter mentioned that the perpetrator told the salesperson that he wanted to hop inside to check out the interior, but before the salesperson could get in the passenger side, he started the car up and took off. It’s unclear if this particular Corvette had already been sold and was awaiting customer pick up, or if it was on the lot looking for a new owner.
With demand still high for the mid-engine Corvette and supply remaining low, it’s no surprise that someone might be a bit anxious to bring one home, but in this case of this brazen criminal, he will likely be starting at the wrong side of a jail cell rather than enjoying a brisk morning drive in the twisties, at least for a while.
