The C5 Corvette may often be overlooked; but this is one car that should not be underestimated.
It might be unfair to measure the C5 Corvette against more recent generations. However, it might surprise many how the C5 Corvettes from 1997 to 2004 hold up so well. Performance is one area where the C5 Corvette is defined and distinct. It is very difficult not to respond to a sports car that is just a blast to drive. Further emphasizing the exhilarating experience, the 1997 Corvette was bringing in some big V8 power to add more bite.
In 1997, a new Corvette debuted. Featuring the most redesigned ‘Vette since 1953; the car was exciting. It looked new and felt fast; both imposing and inviting. Any vehicle that sparks a rush of adrenaline at first sight is the real deal.

C4 Corvette versus C5 Corvette
Balancing jacked up V8 power with oh-so-slinky lines, the C5 Corvette is stunning. Offered with more options, it also had a roomier interior and more cargo space. And ever so casually and coolly, the Corvette would break new ground, introduce new tech with blazing specs.
So what makes the C5 a standout Corvette and a great performance car for the price?
Unleashing the LS1 V8
One of the biggest changes was under the hood, where the C5 Chevy Corvette now ran on an aluminum LS1 V8 engine. As a bulletproof mill paired to a a rear-mounted transmission, the C5 produced 345 hp. By 2001 the output was 350 horses. While it had a serious kick, it was still built for drivers. And as such, the C5 Corvette was able to work as a daily driver. This was also helped by its improved mileage and efficiency.
C5 Corvette Performance
The 1997 Corvette was lower, lighter, and faster than the previous generation. Noticeably stiffer, the C5 Corvette had more responsive braking and improved handling, largely based on the hydrofoam base. Mixing the fast, fun agility with a comfy and more quiet cabin gives the 1997-2004 Corvette a mix of major sports car with daily driving chops.
In addition, the independent suspension, Extended Mobility tires, and the stiffest frame gave the C5 a more dynamic feel. And the balanced front to rear weight ratio worked in balance to the rear transmission, the first Corvette to employ this.
Track-ready Machine
Corvette had more track-focused features with a swooping hood and aero cues. It hits the road hard but smooth, and very capable. With top speeds of 175 mph, it was formidable. But the all-aluminum V8 had high-flow cylinder heads and fuel injection–racing technology that Corvette helped bring to the road.
Bombshell
Visually, the C5 was slick and was a more refined version of the C4 Corvette. With the targa top, pop-up headlamps, and an active spirit; it looked great and refreshed. It was available as a coupe, convertible, and hardtop. Inside, the heads-up display is one of those features you can’t imagine living without. The right look for the right ‘Vette.
The Importance of Z06
One of the greatest accomplishments of the C5 Corvette was the 2004 Corvette Z06. Add on the Z16 package, and it has all the extra bells and whistles, and breakneck capability.
Value
In today’s used car market, the C5 Corvette offers a lot of car for about $12,000 to $20,000. A speedy Corvette with a very satisfying ride quality and classic style is a great deal, but when prices pop up under $10,000–it is hard to resist this incredible (and still-under-the-resale-radar) C5 Corvette.
Not every car is destined to become a classic; but the 1997-2004 C5 Corvette came off the lines ready to roll. Tamer by today’s higher horsepower, it is still a dream car that is pure Corvette from its grit to its grace.
