How the 2019 Corvette ZR1 Changed the Game for Performance Excellence

The 2019 ZR1 is a factory-built, 755 hp supercar that dropped the mic on the seventh generation; and a bomb on the industry.

In 2020, the C8 Corvette hit the scene and forever changed the sports car landscape. Bringing together elements from all generations, the mid-engined C8 is more exciting and relevant than ever. Chevy entered a new field of battle with the redesigned Corvette; and conquered its rivals handily. But we have to give it up to the influential supercar that came before; the 2019 Corvette ZR1. The C7 ZR1 was a different animal–but an animal nonetheless; and with 755 horsepower, it had bite.

2019 marked the last year of C7 generation, which ran from 2014 to 2019. Ending the C7 with the 2019 ZR1 is the definition of going out in a blaze of glory.

Ground-Breaking Power

As Chevy looks towards the future, it must make necessary cuts from its past. And, to the chagrin of many enthusiasts, that means embracing electrification. One casualty was the LT5 engine; the cornerstone of the 2019 C7 Corvette ZR1. Delivering 755 horsepower and 715 lb-ft torque, the supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 V8 is (or rather was) the most powerful engine offered by Chevy.

Designers added a new front fascia that channeled air for propulsion-system and drivetrain cooling. A special carbon-fiber hood was added to accommodate the LT5 engine’s supercharger/intercooler assembly.

Additional aero features added to the high-performance experience. It has a top speed of over 210 mph, and can hit 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds. And it sounds a lot like heaven.

Surprising Performance

While the 2019 Corvette ZR1 was defined largely by the mighty LT5, it was more than raw power. In the C7 ZR1, Corvette had a proper supercar on par with the world’s finest.

Visually the C7 ZR1 is aggressive, but not over-the-top. Well-chosen aero components help to create more downforce without adding drag, and optimize stability, traction, and top speed.

And it comes in manual! Options include a 7-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic paddle-shift transmission.

Not only does the ZR1 look great, it has balance. It is fun and dynamic on the road, but not too much car. Strong but not overwhelming. But when a driver wants that power, the Corvette kicks in to deliver the G-force. It is hard to imagine a more satisfying sound than the rumbling exhaust note.

Ultimately, the 2019 Corvette ZR1 is a unique car that broke the status quo–and possibly the sound barrier. The handling and power are exemplary, and the boundary-pushing Corvette ZR1 definitely influenced the C8 on the art of a streetable track supercar. Simply put, the C7 ZR1 is Corvette at its finest.
