C8 vs C7 Z06. Mid-engine versus rear-wheel drive. N/A vs supercharged. New vs. old. Who? Will? Win???
There are many ways to enjoy the Corvette as a performance machine. And one of our favorites is on the quarter-mile. Seeing and hearing a Corvette going full-throttle truly captures the sports car at its most extreme. It is a beautiful thing. The only thing that can top it would be two Corvettes. This recent drag race shows dueling Corvettes — C8 vs C7 Z06 — settling it on the straightaway.
This battle of the titans was captured at Canada’s Mission Raceway Park by Wheels. Both Corvettes demonstrate a lot of power, and when they go mano-a-mano it reveals a lot of differences in how that power translates to the track. This week’s Torque Tuesday features two serious ‘Vettes battling it out on the most honest proving grounds.
In one corner we have a stock C7 Z06. Sinister in matte black, the front-engine Corvette may be at a disadvantage against the C8. Or maybe not, with a 6.2 L supercharged and intercooled LT4 V8 engine that makes 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque.
However, what a difference a year makes. 2020 C8 Corvette has physics on its side with the mid-engine layout. And we’d never complain about the 6.2-liter LT2 V8 power that the car packs, but if this is stock that means it packing less heat with 495 hp and 470 lb-ft.
When the two launch off the line, it is the C8’s world. But the C7 Z06 shows it too has a lot of oomph, and a strong, solid follow-up. Both cars are incredible, and seeing them side by side you really appreciate what a difference the mid-engine placement makes.
We won’t spoil the races because the results are pretty surprising. And above all else, it is just loud, raucous Corvette fun watching the two generations engage in a little sibling rivalry. Both cars are thrilling, masterful machines. Watching them up close and fairly seismic is very satisfying, and a testament to the Corvettes special ability on the track.
Enjoy!
