Don’t Drive in the Rain: Corvette Restomod Rolls Into Scottsdale

Built by Weaver Customs and bound for Barrett-Jackson, ’63 Corvette features flush front and rear glass, LS3 V8, and no windshield wipers.

As of this writing, Barrett-Jackson is holding its big-tent happening in Scottsdale, set to end March 27. There, dozens of Corvettes move through the block to new homes. Some are straight out of the factory, others brought up to speed with modern pieces. Each one a showstopper in their own right.

Such is the case with this ’63 C2 Corvette. Built by Weaver Customs in Jordan, Utah, the restomod’s got plenty of attitude and power. Just don’t ever drive it in the rain, though.

A Builder’s Dream

“Being a high-end hot rod builder, I’ve always wanted to get my hands on a split-window Corvette,” said Scott Weaver, co-owner of Weaver Customs. “From the factory, these things are super cool. I just wanted to put my twist on it. We started from the foundation up, beginning with a Roadster Shop chassis. The motor’s the GM Performance LS3 525-horse.”

The Corvette’s LS3 links up to the wide rear tires through a 4L65E four-speed auto. Meanwhile, a full set of 14-inch Wilwoods bring it all to a stop. The front corners are anchored by a set of 18×9 Budnicks, the rear 20×15, all shod in Mickey Thompsons. Functional side pipes and custom functional hood vents round-out the package. However, the glass is where it’s truly at.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

“When we do flush-mount glass, this is a stock windshield,” said Weaver. “We build the body out and get this perfect gap all the way around the car. It is a very time-consuming process to get this correct. We probably have anywhere from 100 to 150 hours just in this front windshield.”

The cowl, too, received some major custom touches. Including the removal of the windshield wipers and inset vents, which took 200 hours to accomplish. Thus, this Corvette is a good-weather-only machine. No rain, no snow, only sun. The split-window also received the flush-mounted treatment, taking twice the time as the front glass due to being two pieces.

A Masterpiece for Sunny Days

“This is such a high-end, high-caliber restomod that it really has been a pleasure to have out on the road,” said shop co-owner Sydney Weaver. “It’s got all of those modern creature comforts that anyone is looking for to be able to go out and spend a little bit of time on the road.”

Except for windshield wipers, of course. May the lucky bidder have plenty of shares in Rain-X, or live in the desert.
